We all know how important having a good evening skincare routine is, but having a good morning skincare routine is just as important. Daytime skincare focuses on protection and preservation, whereas nighttime skincare focuses on addressing skin concerns before the sleep regenerative process begins. You can't go back in time and get a younger complexion; all you can do is maintain the one you have now.
The most effective morning skincare routine could easily have twelve steps, but let's face it, no one has that much time. You'll have a flawless face all day if all you can do in the morning is hit the high notes listed below.
Use a low-pH cleanser as part of your daily skincare routine to effectively deep clean without causing redness that is difficult to soothe before applying makeup.
If you have time, make a foam out of your cleanser with a little water and apply it to your skin as a mask for a few minutes (I usually use this time to brush my teeth), then rinse with cold water. To avoid causing more redness or irritation, dry your skin with a clean washcloth. Do not scuff.
Toner is the most misunderstood skincare product, but it's far more important than it's given credit for. Toner is the first barrier product you use; proper toner balances your skin's pH and is designed to hydrate rather than strip your skin, as your middle school astringent did. Apply a few drops of toner to your face with your fingertips or a cotton pad and massage it in.
The most important (and expensive) part of your morning skincare routine. In addition to sun protection, it's an antioxidant-rich serum. Your face is exposed to a variety of agents throughout the day that are trying to harm it: city bus exhaust fumes, a dirty phone screen, cortisol levels during a 3 p.m. conference call, and so on. Serums help your skin stay bright and firm for longer by preventing fine wrinkles between your brows.
The best thing about serums is that a little goes a long way, which helps to make the exorbitant price tag bearable. Apply a couple of pumps to freshly toned skin and let them absorb completely before moving on.
Plumping and moisturising your eyes in the morning can help you look more awake and aid makeup application if you're wearing it. Choose a thinner product in the morning over one that is thick and emollient; it will absorb faster and last longer throughout the day.
There is no such thing as dry skin, and your sunscreen should not be used in place of a moisturiser. These two products serve fundamentally different goals and are not interchangeable, no matter how hydrating your sunscreen claims to be.
If you only had time for one skincare product each morning, it should be sunscreen. There are no excuses for not wearing UV protection on a daily basis, which is as important as drinking water and paying parking tickets on time.
